2If you like a thin, watery, and weak shot of espresso, buy the Saeco Intuita.
By Annie G.
I am an espresso lover. I always seek out the best beans in the US and have them sent to me. Likewise, I go out of my way to get the best espresso in every city I visit. So I have passion for the product and know good espresso. I have had several espresso machines including an older Saeco Magic superautomatic. The old Saeco was very reliable and produced a drinkable but mediocre shot. I needed to by a new superauto for my office. I thought Saeco may have improved things since my purchase 7 years ago.I had high hopes after researching the Intuita - a new model with new features. Saeco goes so far as to claim that the espresso quality from this machine is certified by an Italian tasting institute. The Philips produced videos show the machine producing a luscious shot of espresso. The machine has aroma pre infusion and self rinsing after each shot. At this price point it sounded too good to be true. However, I was a little worried that Philips, having purchased Saeco and Gaggia from the original Italian owners, might have screwed up things.I took the plunge and ordered the Intuita. Got the machine yesterday.Pro:Shorter, more compact and sleeker than expectedeasy setup: 10 minseasy quick start instructionswater and spent grounds box removes easily and nice location- both in front of unitQuick steam and waterGood milk foaming with ParanelloDecent cafe americano or Longo shot quality as these are more "coffees" than espresso.Con:Shot quality. If you like a great shot of espresso with good crema, viscous texture and dark rich appearance and taste - Dont Buy This Machine. The shot is weak, thin and light. Its like a brewed coffee, not espressoI tried everything to correct it. I shortened the shot to 1.5 oz, not much improvement. I turned up coffee dosage to max - Very slight improvement. Went to finest grind - not much better. I switched up coffee beans from three outstanding roasters; from Madcap (Grand Rapids) to Klatch (Los Angeles) to Illy (Trieste, IT).The shots were thin, weak and flavorless with all of three roasts. I think this machine produces an espresso shot that it is so bad it is truely undrinkable and a big step down from my old Saeco. Nice job Philips, you created a machine that can take world class coffee beans and somehow manage to produce an espresso shot that is worse than McDonalds.Saeco now says to pull 30 shots through the machine to "break in the machine". I pulled 20 shots and used ups a few pounds of great bean with little improvement. Its getting ridiculous. I also looked at a seattlecoffegear video review of this espresso maker: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW-qRJ8UqUgI was shocked as I watched them draw a shot from their Saeco intuita that looked equally thin, watery, and undrinkable to what my machine produced. That says it all.Under Philips ownership, Saeco and Gaggia are now using similar components in all their machines, so another model from this conglomerate is unlikely to be an improvement. I am returning the Intuita and will order a Jura Ena.
